In June 2000, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and Pakistan Educational Foundation (PEF) agreed to collaborate for the establishment of a high-quality educational institution at PAF, Korangi Creek Base. The objective of this institution is to contribute to the development of university level education in Pakistan.
The Institute has been growing rapidly in a systematic manner since its inception:
1997 - 2000
Karachi Institute of Economics and Technology was launched in October 1997. Academic departments offering degrees in Management Science and Computer Science[ were established. Department of Management Science offered BBA and MBA degrees with specializations in the fields of Management, Marketing, and Finance. Department of Computer Science offered BCS, MCS and MS-IT degrees.
2000 - 2003
In September 2000, the Institute moved to its current location at PAF Korangi Creek. This campus is spread over 22 acres (0.09 km2). The systems, procedures, faculty, curriculum, library, labs and other facilities have expanded in a planned manner to accommodate the rapid growth of the Institute.
The City Campus of PAF-KIET was established in April 2002 to provide evening programs for the working students. The City Campus is located off Shahrah-e-Faisal near Nursery.
2003 - 2006
The departments of Management Science and Computer Science were elevated to the status of Colleges. College of Computing & Information Sciences and College of Management Sciences started offering advanced research oriented degree programs of MS and PhD. Specialization in MIS, Finance and Accounting were added.
Department of Corporate Relations and R&D Departments were launched.
Two more academic colleges were established namely College of Engineering and College of Humanities and Sciences. College of Engineering offers 4-year BE in Electronics with specialization in Electronics and Telecommunication. The College of Humanities & Social Sciences offers courses in Mathematics, English, Oral and Written Communication and Social Sciences areas.
The Institute in 2005 added specializations in the BE in Electronics. These include Computer Systems, Avionics and Industrial Electronics. MS in Telecommunication Engineering was also launched.
An innovative program of Bachelor of Computer Arts (BCA) was launched to meet the job market requirements in the media
The College of Engineering offers programs leading to bachelor and master's degrees in Engineering. The College offers 4 years Bachelor of Engineering degree in electronics engineering with specialization in telecommunication, computer systems, industrial electronics, avionics and a new specialization added in Fall 2008 - mechatronics. The College also offers research-based Master of Science in the field of telecommunication engineering.
Engineering program of PAF KIET completely fulfills Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) requirements vis-à-vis admission criteria, faculty, curriculum, labs, library resources, computer facilities, buildings, and administration. Application for accreditation was submitted to PEC in 2005 as per the requirements of PEC to accept applications when the first batch is in the third year. On 21 February 2006, the Inspection & Evaluation Team of PEC visited the College of Engineering. An extensive presentation of building facilities, lab resources, systems for academic monitoring, examination control, records management was given to the team. CoE's commitment to meet and then excel beyond the quality standards of PEC was highlighted through the purpose-built building, spacious lecture halls, dedicated and fully equipped labs and library resources already made available to the engineering students. The College is committed and hopeful of meeting all the requirements for PEC accreditation.
MS program in Telecommunication Engineering has been designed to provide a framework for research by students and faculty. The objective of this research is to enable the students and faculty to join the international community of researchers working in their chosen areas of research.
Currently there are several students involved in the MS research. Faculty of the College is also actively involved in supervision of research. Research is taking place in the following areas: Quality of Service for Voice over IP Networks, Mobile Ad-hoc Networks, High Speed Data Services for Wireless Networks, MPLS Networks, Reachability and Stability in Personal Area Networks, Security of Wireless LANs, and Wired and Wireless Communication Devices. Several research papers have been published by the faculty in reputed journals, magazines and conferences. Many others are in the process of preparation.
Another salient feature of PAF KIET is that it frequently holds guest speaker sessions and many reputed professionals, researchers like Dr. Hanif Muhammad of DOW university, Dr. Syed Mehboob, Head Research and Economic Development cell of Karachi chamber of Commerce and Industry, gave valuable information and fruitful presentations to the students.
College of Engineering is planning to add BE Materials and BE Mechanical Engineering by 2009. The College of Humanities and Sciences is planning to launch degree programs in English Literature and Linguistics. A College of Biotechnology is also planned that would be offering cutting edge programs in Genetics and Biotechnology.
